You are not required to own a text for this course. However … there are two texts that are both relatively inexpensive and very, very useful for a first course in differential equations. I will be relying on both these books for examples and for MatLab code. You would be sensible to get them both.
The total cost is somewhere between $60 and $70.
The first book gives you the basic mathematical methods, theories, and practice to solve differential equations. This book is cheap enough ($20 – $25) and useful enough that you will probably want to keep it forever. It is:
- Ordinary Differential Equations, by Morris Tenenbaum & Harry Pollard. Dover Publications, 1985.
ISBN-13: 9780486649405

The second book that is very useful for implementing MatLab code for a first course in differential equations, and one that I personally will use, is:
- Differential Equations with MatLab by Brian Hunt, Ronald Lipsman ,John Osborne & Jonathan Rose. Wiley. ISBN 0471718122
